Luecker aims to utilize her extensive industry experience to connect local readers with stories that resonate, from bestsellers to debut works by new authors. Her passion for literature began in childhood and has continued through her career in publishing. "Reading was my favorite thing... and it has stayed my favorite thing," Luecker told Tucson Spotlight. She majored in English and has maintained a lifelong love of reading.
After falling in love with Tucson during the COVID-19 pandemic, Luecker decided to make it her home. "I’ve always had the dream in the back of my head of opening a bookstore someday," she said. With a desire to experience bookselling from the other side, she chose to open her own shop rather than continue acquiring and publishing books.
This year has seen a surge in independent bookstores nationwide. The American Booksellers Association reported an increase in membership by over 500 in 2026, bringing the total to 3,417 members and 3,783 locations across the country, marking the highest number of new stores since the late 1990s.
Luecker’s journey began with a portable shelf filled with curated used books at various markets in Tucson. The positive community response has encouraged her to pursue a larger vision. "This is actually working, and I think I can do this," she stated, noting the excitement and support she has received from customers.
Throughout her two years of pop-up events, Luecker explored various locations for her shop. After considering multiple sites, she felt that the current location was the right fit, saying, "I’m going to just call this meant to be and go with it."
Even prior to opening, she has received enthusiastic emails from community members expressing their excitement about the new bookstore. The Paper Cat Bookshop will offer a mix of new and used books along with book-related merchandise, creating a tranquil space for reading and relaxation.
In announcing the store's opening on Instagram, Luecker expressed gratitude towards the community for their support and encouragement. "Whether you bought a book, donated funds, or helped me set up, every single thing has helped me get this far," she wrote.
