A LOWCOUNTRY HEART features short nonfiction pieces, many addressed to readers with Conroy's signature greeting, “Hey Out There.” The topics range widely, covering recent favorite reads, the struggle to stay active, and coping with the loss of close friends. These lighthearted and poignant writings offer insight into the life of a significant figure in Southern literature.

The collection also includes some of Conroy’s most cherished speeches and interviews, a heartfelt letter to his grandson, and an introduction by his widow, novelist Cassandra King. Additionally, the book features remembrances from friends celebrating “The Great Conroy,” including his eulogy. This compilation is expected to be a treasured keepsake for Conroy’s fans and serves as a tribute to one of modern America's beloved writers.

In her note to readers, Talese expresses the sense of loss felt upon Conroy's passing, mentioning that he had shared less than 200 pages of his unfinished novel, The Storms of Aquarius, which focused on friendships during the Vietnam War era. She reassures fans that while they continue to seek more material, the pieces in A LOWCOUNTRY HEART were compiled to honor his literary legacy. The release will coincide with what would have been Conroy’s 71st birthday. Conroy, known for eleven previous works, including THE PRINCE OF TIDES and THE GREAT SANTINI, passed away on March 4, 2016.
