One of Grimes' cherished memories comes from a letter by a high school student who read her award-winning book, Bronx Masquerade. The book invites students to share their vulnerabilities through poetry in their English class. The reader expressed that the book transformed his understanding of his classmates, reinforcing the message that literature can foster connection and insight.
Grimes was honored with the Tulsa Library Trust’s 2022 Anne V. Zarrow Award for Young Readers’ Literature. Her writings address challenging themes such as racism, bullying, foster care, and abuse. While her books have faced bans, Grimes acknowledges the complexities of childhood and the resilience of young people. "Childhood is not easy," she states. She believes that exposure to such stories provides hope and insights that help readers navigate their challenges.
Grimes describes poetry as her first language, enabling her to tackle complex topics through symbolism and imagery. "Poetry goes straight to the heart," she asserts, noting that its rhythmic qualities resonate with young readers, similar to song lyrics that many teens cherish.
Beginning her writing journey at age six, Grimes viewed words as playful and magical. She encourages parents to introduce their children to poetry that aligns with their interests, suggesting there are poems available on diverse topics, including sports and science.
