At 76, Carson, who disclosed her diagnosis of Parkinson's disease in 2024, was recognized "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature," according to the Academy.

Ingrid Carlberg, the Academy's permanent secretary, spoke briefly with Carson, who is currently in Iceland. She noted that Carson was surprised but expressed happiness about the honor.

A professor of classics with expertise in literature and anthropology, Carson was praised by The New York Times in 2001 as "one of the great pasticheurs." Her poetry garnered significant acclaim in the 1990s, earning her awards such as the Lannan Award in 1996 and the Pushcart Prize in 1997. In 1998, her critically acclaimed work "Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse" reimagined the Greek myth of Geryon and Herakles within a modern context.

The Academy emphasized that Carson's literary work often explores the intersection of philology and poetic expression. It singled out her poem "Nox," dedicated to her brother who passed away in 2000, describing it as "an unforgettable work" that conveys a profound sense of loss through its unique presentation.

Carson had been speculated as a potential Nobel laureate for several years. The announcement comes amid discussions about gender representation in the Nobel Prize selections; only 19 women have won the literature prize since its inception in 1901. The Academy has faced scrutiny over its historical preference for male laureates.

This year's winner adds to a trend where each recent laureate has been a woman since a scandal in 2018 led to major changes within the Academy. Last year, Hungary's Laszlo Krasznahorkai received the award.

The literature prize is one of six Nobel prizes to be awarded this week, with other categories including medicine, physics, and chemistry. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday.

Each Nobel award includes a diploma, a gold medal, and a prize sum of $1.2 million. Carson will receive the Nobel Prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf in Stockholm on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
