The 43-year-old Sommers, originally from Atascadero, California, has previously published poetry collections centered on his hometown and various social issues. His decision to write odes, defined by The Poetry Foundation as formal lyric poems celebrating people, places, or ideas, stemmed from his belief in the power of praise to engage students in poetry.
Sommers described his unexpected diabetes diagnosis as a serious challenge that initially left him feeling uninformed and fearful. He emphasized the importance of knowledge in managing the condition, noting that much of the advice available was overly scientific, neglecting the emotional realities of living with diabetes. He acknowledged the mental struggles associated with managing his health and began to reframe his experience as a foundation for creativity rather than an obstacle.
During a writing sabbatical, he regularly visited Amélie's French Bakery, where he found that embracing gratitude rather than dwelling on negativity improved his perspective on illness. The title "Diabetic Gumdrops," suggested by his wife Ann, reflects the small joys he found amidst challenges. Sommers views gratitude as a crucial component of both his writing and daily life, aiming to convey hope for those living with diabetes.
Jericho Brown, the 2020 Pulitzer Prize winner for Poetry, endorsed the collection, praising its depth and Sommers's ability to write with conviction. Sommers has deep roots in music, having emerged as a musician before fully embracing poetry, influenced by his father's musical background.
Having earned a Master of Fine Arts degree and a doctorate, Sommers has enjoyed a balance between his artistic pursuits and academic career. He continues to create music alongside his poetry, illustrating his ongoing commitment to both forms of artistic expression.
