WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Bethany Joy Lenz, known for her role as Haley James Scott on the television series One Tree Hill, is making headlines again with her debut novel, The Betrayal of Cora Wexford, scheduled for publication on Tuesday, October 20. Lenz, who previously served as Queen Azalea for the North Carolina Azalea Festival, set her novel in 1888 London during the Jack the Ripper murders, a backdrop she chose to thoughtfully explore themes of physical and psychological violence.

Lenz emphasized that her story highlights how psychological abuse often precedes physical violence in coercive situations. "I wanted to set it in a very moody, creepy, romantic time period, but also look at the parallel of the Whitechapel killer and explore his victims’ lives to humanize these women," she explained. The novel weaves in authentic news reports from the era, further grounding the fictional narrative in historical context.
The protagonist, Cora Wexford, grapples with personal secrets that cause her to question her worthiness of happiness, despite her professional successes. Lenz notes that Cora's journey reflects her own experiences of leaving a high-control group in Idaho, which she detailed in her 2024 memoir, Dinner for Vampires. "I write from personal experience in many ways," she mentioned, aiming for readers to relate to Cora's struggles as a friend to someone in similar circumstances.
Lenz also discussed the challenges and sacrifices necessary to support those in abusive situations. She emphasized the importance of community and advocacy, stating, "It costs you something to stand up for a victim. You're gonna have to have hard conversations."
Writing fiction presented a new challenge for Lenz compared to recounting her life in her memoir. Since its release, she has engaged with readers who have shared their stories of trauma from controlling environments. "I guess I’m just surprised that it resonated the way that it did," she said, acknowledging the widespread impact of her experiences.
Currently, Lenz stars as Rebecca Clark in the Hallmark+ series Hope Valley, a prequel to When Calls the Heart, set in 1874. Reflecting on her affinity for period pieces, she said, "I’ve been dreaming of participating in period pieces as an artist for so long."
On the enduring popularity of One Tree Hill, Lenz noted the show's loyal fanbase, which recently gathered for a reunion at UNCW, commemorating 23 years since its debut. Lenz's daughter is among those exploring the series, showing its ongoing appeal to new generations seeking nostalgia.
The Betrayal of Cora Wexford is set for release on October 20, and Lenz will host an 'author talk' at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh on October 21, although the event is sold out.
