In a June 13 email interview, Kim discussed her background. She shared that she grew up in Korea and later pursued her artistic aspirations in the United States, having initially studied English literature at college but transferring to an art school in New York. Her passion for drawing and storytelling led her to become a children's book author and illustrator.
Kim draws inspiration from her environment. For example, her book "Let's Go to Taekwondo!" was inspired by the sight of children in taekwondo uniforms in New York City. She aimed to create a story that would resonate both with Korean readers and those unfamiliar with the culture. She highlighted the prevalence of taekwondo studios in New York as a catalyst for her writing.
Her upcoming book, "Tomorrow Is New Year's Day," is set to be published in December and will focus on Seollal, or Lunar New Year, which is a significant holiday in Korea. She intends for this book to be both fun and educational for readers who may not be familiar with the celebration.
Originally, Kim did not plan to create a series focused on Korean culture. Her journey began with "No Kimchi for Me!" which centered on the importance of kimchi in Korean culture and was well-received, prompting her publisher to encourage her to continue writing on similar themes.
In reflecting on her artistic dreams, Kim envisions creating a series based on Korean folktales, which she fondly remembers from her childhood and wants to adapt for a younger audience.
For aspiring illustrators, Kim advises them to draw what they love and know, emphasizing the importance of personal passion in creative work.
