Details remain unclear about how audiobooks would be showcased or whether individual titles would incur charges. However, sources indicated that YouTube may bundle audiobooks with its YouTube Premium subscription service, which starts at $15.99 a month in the U.S. This initiative is part of YouTube's strategy to enhance its subscription appeal and differentiate itself from competing platforms.
In the current U.S. market, Spotify and Amazon's Audible dominate the audiobook sector. Publishers view YouTube's impending entry as an opportunity to tap into its extensive user base for the audiobook market and anticipate a revenue boost by addressing the issue of unauthorized audiobooks that often appear on the platform. Unauthorized uploads of book readings or AI-generated audiobooks have proliferated, and enforcement against these practices has been limited.
A February survey by Edison Research, involving 1,706 audiobook listeners aged 18 and older, found that 45% had listened to an audiobook on YouTube, up from 35% in 2024.
The potential for audiobooks is underscored by their growth as the fastest-growing segment in the publishing industry. The Association of American Publishers projects that digital audiobook sales revenue will climb from approximately $265 million in 2016 to $1 billion in 2025—a rise of around 43% from 2024.
The convenience of audiobooks contributes to their popularity, with listeners citing multitasking (86%) and the ability to listen on the go (84%) as their primary advantages in the Edison Research survey. Revenue from "audio first" titles, released as audiobooks prior to print versions, surged 50% to $136 million in 2025 from $91.1 million in 2024, comprising 6% of total net revenue.
Attitudes towards AI-narrated audiobooks present a mixed picture. While consumption and releases of AI-generated audiobooks increased in 2025, the willingness to try them fell from 70% in 2025 to 61% in 2026. Only 16% of audiobook listeners reported experiencing an AI-voiced audiobook, with AI-related revenue making up just 0.03% of total sales in 2025.
