Katie Ellis-Brown and Becky Hunter, experienced publishing professionals, have co-authored their first fantasy novel, Blood Bound, under the pen name Ellis Hunter. The duo's journey in writing began when they met in 2016 during a staff transition at Headline Publishing, where Hunter replaced Ellis-Brown. Their friendship deepened in 2022 when Hunter moved to Falmouth, just a short drive from Ellis-Brown's home. It was during this time that they discovered their mutual love for fantasy literature.

Their collaboration was spurred by Ellis-Brown's recommendation of Rebecca Yarros’ popular novel Fourth Wing, which captivated Hunter and prompted them to consider writing together. Although Hunter initially suggested they write a dragon-themed book, the first draft of Blood Bound surprisingly did not include any dragons. Hunter expressed concerns that the motif had become clichéd, influenced by her industry experience, leading Ellis-Brown to persuade her otherwise. Ultimately, dragons play a significant role in the novel.

Blood Bound marks Hunter's first fantasy project and the first time she has co-authored a novel. She previously published eight romances under her own name and the pseudonym Emily Stone. Hunter described the experience as a valuable learning process, particularly in sharing excitement over the book's developments, including the anticipation of receiving a US pre-empt offer.

The narrative features fantastical beings, including dragons and familiars—spiritually linked animals that accompany the witches of Arturea. Notable characters include Astrid, the heir to Arturea’s throne, who faces a deadly duel against Prince Zryan of Vatra to secure a powerful magic source called the Heart. Intriguingly, Zryan is bound to a dragon, making it historically difficult for a witch to win the contest.

The authors emphasize that while Blood Bound contains romantic elements, it prioritizes world-building and complex magic systems. The dual narratives alternate between Astrid, written by Ellis-Brown, and Skylar, crafted by Hunter. Astrid's character reflects Ellis-Brown's own experiences with bipolar disorder, aiming to present a nuanced depiction of the condition. Skylar's background, developed by Hunter, explores themes of loss and emotional isolation, mirroring the authors' friendship.

The story also touches on socio-ecological themes, with both kingdoms facing environmental crises. Ellis-Brown and Hunter aim to comment on real-world issues through the fantasy lens, finding a different narrative space to address challenges like capitalism and environmental degradation.

Blood Bound combines engaging storytelling with heartfelt themes of friendship, offering a fresh take on familiar fantasy tropes.
