The poem explores Luisa's identity as a Colombian American by incorporating the colors of the Colombian flag, symbolizing the connection between her two cultural backgrounds. The inspiration struck her while she thought about how the flag's colors fit together, and she aimed to reflect her cultural pride while encouraging others to embrace their identities.

Having participated in the contest multiple times without making the Top 10, achieving this recognition was a significant milestone for Luisa. Her mother, Lauren Gonzalez, shared the contest results with her, leading to a joyful reaction: "A smile spread across my face and I jumped up and down!" Luisa expressed excitement over her achievement, stating it was her first time reaching the Top 10.

Luisa's journey into poetry began with storytelling and songwriting, including her own book series in the first grade. A suggestion from her aunt nudged her towards poetry, and she now enjoys writing and reading extensively, often during daily activities like car rides. Her influences include literary figures such as Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou, as well as songwriter Dolly Parton.

Maintaining close ties to Colombia, Luisa and her family travel there every other year to visit her grandparents. Spanish is an integral part of her home life, enhancing her cultural experiences, which she expressed in her award-winning poem.

Luisa has participated in community events, including the Collingswood Hispanic Heritage Festival, where she gained confidence in public speaking. She aims to encourage other children to explore their interests and hopes to become a teacher, poet, and author in the future. The other Top 10 winners in her category included Patti-Rose Gonzalez, Eugene Wong, Eli Johnson, Hanifa Khan, Henry Wang, Aila Adeline, Anna Zhao, Jayceon Jones, and Luke Feirstein.
