Knopf describes the compilation as ranging from intimate personal recollections to bold intellectual inquiries. Jordan Pavlin, Knopf Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, characterized the book as an exploration of the themes that inform McEwan's fiction, including the nature of truth, love, and the human quest for meaning.
McEwan noted that what began as a collection of assorted writings has evolved into an emotional and intellectual journey. The author previously released a shorter nonfiction piece titled Science in 2019. His most recent book, What We Know, was published in 2025 and is set in a future UK.
Born in 1948 in Aldershot, England, McEwan has had a distinguished literary career, studying at the Universities of Sussex and East Anglia. His early works include the story collections First Love Last Rites and In Between the Sheets, followed by novels such as The Cement Garden, The Comfort of Strangers, and The Child in Time. Atonement, published in 2001, won both the WH Smith Literary Award and the US National Book Critics' Circle Award.
