The festival will combine author discussions with performances. Salman Rushdie and poet Rachel Eliza Griffiths are set to discuss the documentary “Knife” following a screening. Barbara Kingsolver will present her latest novel, “Partita,” accompanied by a piano performance. Additionally, former ballet dancer and photographer Steven Caras will engage in a conversation after which Miami City Ballet dancers will perform.
The festival will close on November 15 with a staged reading of Virginia Woolf’s play “Freshwater.” Family-friendly events include a session with prima ballerina Misty Copeland aimed at children aged 8 to 12 and a performance by children’s author Eric Litwin, the creator of the “Pete the Cat” series. Litwin plans to visit three schools in the Charleston County School District, with about 1,500 students expected to participate.
Additional activities are planned for students and emerging writers, with over 500 local students anticipated to attend field trips. Authors will visit the College of Charleston and local schools. The new Fiederowicz International Fellowship will bring Ukrainian author Kateryna Yehorushkina to Charleston for workshops, while the Wayland and Marion Cato Fellowship winner will receive a $10,000 prize. The festival will also honor nine student works in poetry, journalism, and short story with its Young Writers Awards.
Most events will take place at the Dock Street Theatre, with a special event featuring chef Kwame Onwuachi and “Food & Wine” editor Hunter Lewis scheduled at the Charleston Gaillard Center. Tickets and the full schedule are available on the festival's official website.
