The poems in “Diabetic Gumdrops” were penned in the six months following Sommers’ diagnosis in June 2024, when he discovered he had Type 1 diabetes during a visit to the doctor. Upon receiving his diagnosis, he began using insulin, needles, and a continuous glucose monitor.
According to the publisher Main Street Rag, this new collection includes 24 poems that address various aspects of living with a chronic illness, touching on themes such as needles, the spouses of those with diabetes, encounters with healthcare professionals, and personal reflections on his journey.
Sommers expressed that writing the collection was a means to shift toward a mindset of gratitude, stating that he aimed to cultivate a hopeful perspective during the initial challenging phase of his illness. He hopes the book will resonate with individuals living with diabetes, their families, and those newly diagnosed or grappling with illness.
He noted, "There are plenty of reasons to be upset about diabetes, of course... but we are never without joy."
The collection has garnered praise from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jericho Brown, who highlighted the passion and depth of Sommers' work, emphasizing its exploration of love, loss, and health.
“Diabetic Gumdrops” is available for purchase for $9, plus shipping, through Main Street Rag’s online bookstore. More information about Sommers can be found at www.ephraimscottsommers.com.
