Jessica Montado, the author behind Cosy Kitchen Corner, has launched her latest book, ‘A Legacy of Recipes from Lely’s Kitchen,’ which features dishes handed down from her grandmother, Lely. Montado describes the book as a reflection of local traditions, culture, and family memories rather than just a collection of recipes.

In an interview, Montado explained that the recipes are deeply personal, originating from the time she spent in her grandmother's kitchen. Lely, who was born in Gibraltar, embodied the diverse culinary influences of the region through her cooking, which incorporates elements from various cultures, including Spanish, Italian, and British cuisines. Montado aims to preserve not only the food but also the stories and traditions that accompany it, as they are integral to her family history and Gibraltar’s culinary heritage.

Montado waited until the right moment to compile these recipes, realizing over time how easily family stories can fade. She consulted her mother extensively while writing, using recordings of their conversations to capture details accurately. Her grandmother had encouraged her to document the recipes years earlier, emphasizing the importance of passing them down.

Reflecting on Gibraltarian cuisine, Montado noted its rich tapestry, showcasing influences from Spain, Italy, Malta, and beyond. Traditional dishes like calentita and rosto are not just meals but part of a shared cultural identity. She pointed out that younger generations might be at risk of losing these traditional dishes due to changing lifestyles and dining habits.

Montado expressed concern about the disconnection between current youth and established recipes. Her book aims to bridge that gap and ensure these culinary traditions are not forgotten. She emphasized the importance of home cooking in cultivating family bonding and preserving cultural knowledge.

‘A Legacy of Recipes from Lely’s Kitchen’ is available directly through Montado's website, the Gibraltar Heritage Trust Gift Shop, and BookGem. She has received a positive response to the book and is exploring options for broader distribution, including potentially translating it into Spanish.

Montado hopes to see Gibraltarian cuisine celebrated in local restaurants, which could enhance visitors’ experiences while also promoting pride in cultural identity. She believes that showcasing traditional dishes would not only preserve culinary history but also foster new food traditions for future generations.
