Katie Cotton, Magic Cat's picture books publisher, acquired the rights from Jon Wood at RCW, on behalf of Harris, and Courtney Donovan at Writers House for Veve's illustrations.
Magic Cat described 'Once, in the Forest' as influenced by classic animal fables and forest tales that inspired Harris during her youth. The publisher emphasized that the book is not a compilation of retellings, but comprises original narratives rooted in the traditional style of fables across various cultures, including the Panchatantra from India, Anansi stories from Ghana, and the fables of Aesop and La Fontaine.
While each fable reflects traditional storytelling, the publisher noted they are also "rooted in the realities of contemporary life."
Harris expressed her excitement about the collection, stating she had a wonderful experience writing the stories. She remarked that fables have been universal for centuries because people often relate to animal characters more than human ones. "These stories carry messages that resonate deeply within us, from our time in the forest. I hope people of all ages will find something to amuse and inspire in them," she said.
Cotton also shared her enthusiasm, stating, "I've long been a fan of Joanne Harris, so when the opportunity arose to publish her first children's book, I jumped at the chance. These tales are rich with humor and wisdom, exploring the darker aspects of humanity—elements often absent from children's literature."
