The National Baseball Poetry Festival, based in Worcester, has seen significant growth in its four years of operation. During a recent panel discussion, WoMag editor Victor D. Infante suggested that the late Boston poet Jack McCarthy's poem "The Walk of Life" stands as the modern equivalent of "Casey at the Bat."

Infante participated in the panel alongside fellow poets Steve Hickoff, Tiffany Babb, and Eric Poulin. The discussion took place at the White Room in Worcester's Canal District. Festival co-founder Steven Biondolillo provided coffee for the attendees, enhancing the experience despite the early Saturday start.

The festival has surpassed initial expectations, thriving even in a challenging cultural landscape where many other events are struggling. Biondolillo remarked on the festival's successful fourth year and the unique cultural climate in Worcester, which often embraces unconventional art initiatives.

The panel featured lively discussions around the intersection of poetry and baseball. Infante, although not a baseball expert, expressed a deep appreciation for poetry and acknowledged his lack of personal experience writing baseball-themed poetry. However, he praised McCarthy’s work, describing "The Walk of Life" as his favorite contemporary baseball poem

During the event, the festival reported impressive participation in its poetry contests. 315 adults submitted entries from 42 states and 12 countries, while the youth contest collected 202 submissions from 13 states and two countries. Biondolillo noted that 60 adult poets presented their works at various festival events, which were held at venues including Polar Park and BirchTree Bread Company.

A total of 20 winners were recognized in the adult contest, with an additional 60 awards for youth participants. Biondolillo pointed out a surprising disparity in participation from Worcester, with only 12 adult entries compared to 65 from youth, attributing this to local teachers' encouragement.

As for Infante's panel experience, he faced an unexpected challenge when he realized he had forgotten to bring McCarthy's book with the poem. Despite this setback, he spoke about the emotional weight of "The Walk of Life," which reflects on the Boston Red Sox's infamous loss in the 1986 World Series, marked by Bill Buckner's errors.

Infante quoted McCarthy’s empathetic reflections on the incident, emphasizing the shared vulnerabilities and humanity inherent in sports failures. He asserted that this poem deserves recognition as the greatest baseball poem since "Casey at the Bat." For those with alternative suggestions for modern baseball poetry, Biondolillo invites responses to his email.
