Canberra Writers Festival 2026: Highlights and Schedule

Under the theme "For the Love of Books," the festival aims to remind attendees of the significance of literature. Artistic Director Andra Putnis emphasizes the emotional connection people have with books, encouraging participants to celebrate existing favorites and explore new works.

This year's program highlights local and national authors, with a focus on those connected to Canberra. Notable names include Chris Hammer, Karen Viggers, and Garth Nix, along with events featuring award-winning authors like Mirandi Riwoe and Petronella McGovern.

The festival will also spotlight women’s voices, with discussions on women-centered fiction featuring Jane Caro, Naïma Brown, and others. Pip Williams will present her new book, while conversations will explore topics such as "mum rage" and women's roles in leadership.

For families, the festival includes a Family Friendly Festival Hub on Saturday, October 17, with activities like performances by the Woden Valley Youth Choir and discussions on memorable female characters in literature.

Innovative and unexpected events are on offer as well, such as an improvised rom-com show titled "My Dirty Awkward Rom Com!" and a trivia competition hosted by comedian Chris Ryan.

Culinary events will combine food and storytelling, with discussions on the cultural significance of cooking alongside tastings. Notable chefs, including Josh Niland, are scheduled to participate.

The festival also tackles substantial themes such as politics and technology. Discussions will feature prominent figures like Waleed Aly and Paul Barry, exploring contemporary political issues and free speech.
