Melineh Ani Merdjanian Yemenidjian, a special needs instructional aide from Los Angeles, has published a poetic memoir titled The Split Pomegranate. The work is described by the International Armenian Literary Alliance (IALA) as an “intimate and fiercely honest collection” that captures the journey of an Armenian American woman grappling with mental health issues, inherited trauma, and the intricate connections of love and heritage. Yemenidjian, who resides with her husband Christopher and their two sons, Norayr and John, is a great-grandchild of Armenian Genocide survivors. This heritage informs her deep commitment to preserving her family's history.

In reflecting on her writing process, Yemenidjian stated that she began writing poetry at the age of 12 as a response to bullying. The passion for writing evolved from journaling, with her personal journals serving as vital resources in crafting her memoir. The final poem in her collection, “The Genesis of a Poem,” encapsulates her poetic journey, emphasizing a sensual connection to the craft and touching on themes of self-exploration and deviation from cultural expectations.

During an interview, she discussed how her book came into being through her involvement in the Community Literature Initiative (CLI) program, which took place from September 2024 to June 2025. The compilation of poems she had written since 2011 contributed significantly to the memoir's development.

Yemenidjian is also working on her first novel, a piece of women's fiction that further explores themes found in The Split Pomegranate. She advised aspiring Armenian writers to focus on their craft rather than the pursuit of publication for recognition, emphasizing that writing should come from passion rather than a desire for validation.

The Split Pomegranate was published by Daxson Publishing, a company known for uplifting underserved voices in literature. Yemenidjian expressed support for those who may question their place in the literary community and welcomed discussions about writing, poetry, and publishing.
