Ingrid Carlberg, the permanent secretary of the academy, stated that Carson’s work engages in "playful dialogue with the classical tradition," resulting in the creation of new forms for contemporary literature.

At 76 years old, Carson is a professor of classics, creative writing, and comparative literature at renowned institutions such as McGill University and Princeton University. Her recognition as the 19th woman among 123 laureates marks a significant achievement in the history of the prize.

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson's family moved around various small towns in Canada during her childhood. She attributes her passion for language and the classics to a dedicated Latin teacher.

Her influential first book of criticism, Eros the Bittersweet, was published in 1986 and has since impacted classicists, poets, and the realms of film and television. Carson is also known for her poetry, including her 2001 collection The Beauty of the Husband, and for her notable translations of ancient Greek poets, such as Sappho and Sophocles.

Deeply influenced by texts like the King James Bible, as well as modern authors like Emily Dickinson and Virginia Woolf, Carson has received several prestigious awards, including the T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry and a MacArthur fellowship.

Carson is known for her private nature, often avoiding personal discussions in interviews and discouraging autobiographical interpretations of her work. However, it was revealed in 2024 that she has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

In other Nobel Prize announcements, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded on Monday to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for their groundbreaking work on optogenetics. The Prize in Physics recognized Francis Halzen on Tuesday for his contributions to a new era in astronomy, while the Chemistry Prize went to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai on Wednesday for their work on homochirality.

As for the next steps for Carson, the Nobel Prize in Literature comes with a cash award of 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately $1.2 million, a medal, and a diploma to be presented at an official ceremony in December, where she is expected to deliver a Nobel lecture.

The announcement for the Nobel Peace Prize will follow on Friday, with the Prize in Economic Sciences slated for Monday.
