During the interview, Powell reflected on his journey from growing up in a single-mother household on welfare in New Jersey to becoming a prominent literary and activist voice in America. He underscored the connection between poetry, music, and social action, stating, "To us, poetry IS music. The way we speak is poetry, the way we walk is poetry, the way we dress is poetry... Poetry actually is everything that we do as a people."
Powell also addressed the importance of literacy and language, expressing concern over the diminishing emphasis on foundational reading, writing, and history skills in a digital and standardized testing environment. He shared insights about Tupac Shakur, having written three cover stories on the artist in the 1990s, noting how Shakur’s poetic influence remains relevant across generations.
His new collection blends various forms, including sonnets, haikus, and hip-hop rhythms, and Powell announced that an accompanying spoken-word album is set for release in early 2027.
Fans in Atlanta have the opportunity to meet Powell tonight at Mood's Music, located at 1131 Euclid Ave NE, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The event is free and will include a community conversation, poetry readings, and a book signing.
