Since its inception in 1999 at Canal Street Tavern, the Dayton Poetry Slam has transitioned through 11 different venues. Host Link Schreiber emphasized the enduring sense of connection among participants: "Every few years a few poets show up and they love it so much, and then they bring a mass of individuals. It's always lovely to see people of so many different backgrounds coming in and just dropping everything and enjoying poetry or getting loud or just having fun and relaxing."
For 27 years, the Dayton Poetry Slam has been a platform for audiences to read, write, and experience poetry. Host Jonathon Gallienne highlighted the community spirit during the events, noting how attendees support first-time performers with enthusiasm. "It really speaks to the way that our community supports people when they say it is their first time and everyone in the room breaks into a chant. I think the fact that this community exists and that there are people who want to support others within our community is the best part of it."
The Dayton Poetry Slam invites poetry enthusiasts to join them at their new home on November 1. Additional information and future events can be found on their Instagram and Facebook pages.
