The collection is rooted in real-life experiences, encapsulating the stories and events from Beer’s time in ranching, as well as contributions from coworkers, friends, and family. The poems celebrate various aspects of ranch life, including the relationships with horses and dogs, the humor and challenges of the work, and reflective pieces on family and mentorship. This collection follows his debut, *Cabin Whispers*, while introducing new stories shaped by his experiences.
Beer expressed that the western lifestyle can be grueling but also rewarding, attributing his enjoyment of the work to the good people he has met along the way. The inspiration for the book came from sharing poetic stories with coworkers, rather than a specific intention to become a published author. He noted that his friends and family encouraged him to compile his writings into a book.
His first collection, *Cabin Whispers*, received recognition from Tim O’Byrne, editor of *Working Ranch Magazine*, who praised its authenticity. Beer has also participated in interviews, including one with Mark McTighe of the *Fort Macleod Gazette*, following a poetry reading.
*This Cowboyin’ Thing* targets readers aged twelve and older who are interested in ranching and rural life. Beer emphasizes that his writings stem from personal experiences rather than research, highlighting true stories intertwined with those of his colleagues over several decades. He recalls his transition from a religious upbringing to a life as a skilled cowboy and horse trainer.
Looking ahead, Beer hopes to reach more readers who share an interest in ranch and rural life. He continues to live and work on the Canadian prairies, the backdrop for many of his poems, and welcomes feedback from readers and industry peers.
*This Cowboyin’ Thing: Ranch and Farm Tales from the North West* is now available for purchase at various retailers.
