The event aims to create an inclusive environment, especially for children with medical complexities, as well as visible and invisible disabilities. City of Rock Hill Poet Laureate Carlo L’Chelle Dawson and Youth Poet Laureate Kh’Mani Gilliam created the event as part of the We Are Rock Hill Poetry Festival. Both poets have personal ties to the cause; Gilliam's motivation stems from her 2-year-old brother, who has PIGA, while Dawson’s commitment arises from her experience with her children who have invisible disabilities.
During the event, participants will experience engaging poetry readings by Gilliam and a special interactive activity led by Dawson. Local authors, including Emmy-Award Winning Journalist Laurabree and Meteorologist Keith Monday, will read their children’s book, Weathering the Storm, which narrates Monday’s journey from childhood fears to a successful career in meteorology.
In addition to poetry and storytelling, families will have the chance to engage in hands-on activities and connect with organizations supporting children and families in the community.
