Knopf Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Jordan Pavlin described the book as "an intimate record of a great mind wrestling with the contours of his own life and all the themes and questions that inform his masterworks: the nature of truth and love, the human hunger for meaning and knowledge, the mysteries of the soul."

McEwan, who is 78 years old, remarked that he began the project with a variety of disparate writings and aims to deliver an emotional and intellectual journey through the collection.

The author previously published a short nonfiction piece titled Science in 2019. McEwan's last full-length book, What We Know, released in 2025, was characterized as "science fiction without the science," set in a future UK.

Born in 1948 in Aldershot to a wounded army NCO, McEwan studied at Sussex and East Anglia. He gained recognition with his short story collections First Love Last Rites and In Between the Sheets, followed by a series of successful novels including The Cement Garden, Black Dogs, and Enduring Love. His literary achievements include winning the Booker Prize for Amsterdam and various other awards for Atonement.
