Reflecting on his growth, Young-Odor acknowledged that while his educational path was effective, it wasn't the most efficient. He noted that although he missed access to college-level resources in high school, platforms like YouTube could have provided valuable poetry lessons and performances to accelerate his development. He believes that greater exposure to esteemed poets and their works would have enriched his skills even further.
He identified two essential skills in his development: memorizing poetry for performances and writing quality poems on any topic. These abilities allow him to seize more performance opportunities and cater to diverse client requests. However, balancing his poetry with non-poetry coursework, first as a biology major and now as a nursing student, has occasionally diverted his focus from his creative pursuits.
Young-Odor describes himself as both a page and spoken word poet. His written poetry has been published in various literary journals, including Welter Literary Journal and Glass Mountain. He performs spoken word poetry at a range of venues in Houston and beyond, tackling topics such as culture, family, and current events. He collaborates with artists from various fields and takes commissions to create poems for brands and organizations. Young-Odor also manages a YouTube channel, Youngblood Poetry, which has over 25,000 subscribers and 3 million views, featuring his performances and poetry lessons. He plans to release a collection of Christian spoken word poems in 2026.
Young-Odor's mission as an artist is to elevate poetry to mainstream status, similar to comedy and music, where artists enjoy substantial financial backing. He envisions a world where poetry is as recognized and celebrated. He believes poetry is uniquely accessible, requiring little to no tools for creation, and wants to normalize its presence in various settings, from weddings to mainstream media.
The most rewarding part of his work is hearing how his poems impact others. For Young-Odor, receiving feedback that his poetry inspires or uplifts people reinforces the greater purpose behind his artistic endeavor. He sees his work as a means to connect with others, instill understanding, and promote love and education through art.
