Gómez is notable for his appearances on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, TV One’s Verses and Flow, and the film Inside Man alongside Denzel Washington. He has received multiple literary accolades, such as the 2025 Alta California Chapbook Prize for *Patrilineation* and the 2020 Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry for *Fractures*.
His poetry addresses themes of identity, oppression, and masculinity while emphasizing love and vulnerability as counterpoints. In an interview with The Observer, Gómez discussed a pivotal moment at age 17 when a reading by poet Martín Espada influenced his decision to pursue writing. He shared, "To me, that moment and me still being alive are proof that a poem can save a life." He aims to create art that helps others feel seen and empowered, reflecting on his own transformative experiences.
Gómez has performed at over 1,500 institutions and events worldwide. He expressed that his favorite moments come when his poetry resonates with others, helping them overcome personal struggles.
During the 5:30 p.m. reading at Central Washington University's North Academic Commons, CWU professor Xavier Cavazos introduced Gómez, drawing connections between their paths in poetry through the New York Poets Café.
Candace Walsh, coordinator of the Lion Rock Series, highlighted the success of recent events, stating that they attract between 60 to 70 attendees from various backgrounds. She emphasized the importance of providing audiences with enriching experiences that encourage presence and connection.
