Palm Springs, CA (The Hollywood Times) 10/6/26 – On Sunday, many gathered at Kitchen 86 in Palm Desert for the event, Doris K. Reed: A Woman and Her Poetry.
The venue was filled, with attendees enjoying delicious food and cold drinks as Doris began her readings. Her poetry features a smooth, musical quality, weaving powerful, humorous, sensual, and tender themes, often within minutes of each other. Audiences are drawn to her command of language and the way she allows certain words to linger.
With over 40 years of writing experience, Doris Reed is not only a poet but also a writer, artist, recording artist, and motivational speaker. Her works have been featured in various newspapers, magazines, and anthologies. She has published two poetry collections, a children’s book, and a spoken-word CD, performing her poetry on stages throughout the country.
One notable poem, “On the Shoulders of Time,” serves as a tribute to her ancestors. In it, she reflects on the painful history of those torn from Africa, emphasizing their resilience and struggles. Rather than leaving them in their suffering, Doris connects with their endurance, acknowledging their sacrifices as foundational to her own life and aspirations. The poem addresses themes of memory, inheritance, and the survival of hope.
In addition, Doris explores the topic of women loving women candidly within her poetry. She presents this love as sensual and ordinary without hesitation or apology, celebrating the joy in such relationships, especially as someone who remembers a time when such expressions were often hidden. Her work boldly affirms the existence and legitimacy of these desires.
Doris maintains that everyone has a voice that can drive change, and after an hour listening to hers, many find this belief resonates deeply.
Doris K. Reed is a poet worth seeing whenever the opportunity arises.
