The novel is inspired by the real-life experiences of a woman who faced a traumatic childhood and a forced marriage as a teenager. It explores themes of survival, resilience, and the potential for healing amidst ongoing issues of underage trafficking and abusive relationships across the nation.

No Way Out but Through tells the story of Shannon Irwin, who meets Grace Ferrall, a young woman with a harrowing past. Shannon agrees to write Grace’s story, which prompts both women to confront their own painful histories. The narrative intertwines present-day Pawleys Island, South Carolina, with 1990s rural Oklahoma.

Grace's early life in Robbins, Louisiana, is marked by instability due to her alcoholic father and her mother’s unpredictable behavior. At just 15, she is coerced into marrying Rafe, an older man who is abusive. The narrative follows Grace through years of torment, multiple pregnancies, and a sense of entrapment.

With support from an unexpected ally, Grace eventually escapes her situation, but freedom poses its own challenges. She faces difficult choices to protect herself and her two daughters. As she and Shannon develop a deeper bond, they both confront their past traumas, fostering trust and healing.

Zurenda has a distinguished career in literature and education, having taught English for 33 years at various levels, including Advanced Placement. Her debut novel, Bells for Eli, received multiple accolades, including the IPPY first place award for Best First Book—Fiction. Her second novel, The Girl From the Red Rose Motel, also garnered significant recognition.

In No Way Out but Through, Zurenda tackles the sensitive topic of child marriage, revealing that approximately 315,000 minors were legally married in the U.S. between 2000 and 2021, with most being girls married to adult men. The novel aims to illuminate this complex issue through Grace’s journey, offering a narrative of courage and connection.
