Lauren Rothery’s debut novel, "Television," features three distinct voices from the dynamic world of Hollywood, exploring their interconnected lives. The narrative alternates between Verity, a successful box office star grappling with fame and personal issues, and Helen, a screenwriter and Verity's long-time friend, who provides insight into his past struggles. The story also introduces Phoebe, a young aspiring screenwriter who brings a fresh perspective. Phoebe wryly notes the challenges of turning ideas into actual screenplays.

Rothery began writing "Television" in spring 2023. She originally conceived Verity’s journey and later felt the need to include Helen, whose relationship with Verity captures the nuances of their shared history. Rothery aims to depict a love story that deviates from traditional Hollywood tropes, focusing on genuine connection despite differing goals.
In an email exchange, Rothery highlighted how her own experiences in the entertainment industry influenced the characters. She noted that each character reflects different facets of the film business, shaped by her decade-long journey which included various roles and independent projects without formal film school training.
Speaking about the character dynamics, she described Helen as Verity's best friend and occasional lover, contrasting their perspectives on their shared experiences. Rothery's idea for Verity's unique lottery, in which the actor offers his earnings to a fan, emerged during the pandemic as a creative outlet. This concept, she admits, blurs the lines between altruism and commercialism in Hollywood.
Phoebe's character was added to embody the complexities of connection and the missed opportunities in life. Her sections incorporate various narrative forms, reflecting Rothery's belief that many potential friendships are lost to chance. As for future projects, Rothery is already working on another book.
