Eulalia Books, a poetry-in-translation publisher affiliated with Saint Vincent College, recently released “Another Life,” written by Daniel Lipara and translated by Robin Myers. This marks Lipara’s first book of poetry, originally published in Spanish as “Otra Vida.” Myers is known for translating works from Spanish, including “The Restless Dead” by renowned Mexican author Cristina Rivera Garza.

“Another Life” intertwines themes of family history, travel, and initiation, drawing inspiration from both “The Odyssey” and Alice Oswald's “Memorial.” Emily Wilson, the first woman to translate “The Odyssey,” described the book as “a vivid, evocative account of family, place and memory, through Homeric poetry and myth, beautifully translated by Robin Myers.” Myers expressed her admiration for the book’s “quiet, observant warmth,” and emphasized her effort to preserve the poem's gesturality, noting how it weaves present and past in a complex narrative structure.

Scottish poet John Burnside praised “Another Life” for its exploration of family, spiritual discovery, and the nuances of language, calling it “one of the finest books of poetry that I have read in some time.” The book's English title directly translates from its Spanish counterpart, with cover art crafted by Eulalia co-editor Román Antopolsky.

To celebrate the release, Eulalia will host an event in partnership with White Whale Bookstore on Monday, Sept. 27, at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom as part of the college’s Visiting Writer Series. The event will feature readings and discussions with both Lipara and Myers. Attendees can register for free or pay-what-you-can tickets through the White Whale Bookstore website, with registration closing at 6:30 p.m. on the day of the event.

Eulalia Books is part of Saint Vincent College’s literary translation program, which aims to publish modern and contemporary poets who have yet to have a complete work translated into English.
