Brodie has been passionate about storytelling since childhood, often inventing tales for her younger siblings. An early recognition for her writing in first grade and her experience reading *The School Story* by Andrew Clements cemented her desire to enter the publishing world. Her first novella was completed at the age of sixteen, and she has focused on long-form fiction ever since.
In a quick-fire round, Brodie shares key influences:
- First book read: *Grandfather Twilight* by Barbara Berger
- Book that inspired her to write: *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban* by J.K. Rowling
- Book that lingers in her mind: *Song of Achilles* by Madeline Miller.
*Into The Blue*, released on April 7, is described by Brodie as "Romantic, Fun, Hot, Sad, Hopeful." The story follows AJ Graves and Noah Drew, two soulmates who meet in the summer of 2000 at a video store. Their deep connection faces challenges as Noah leaves abruptly, leading to thirteen years of chance encounters across various entertainment venues, where they remain drawn to each other despite life's obstacles. The novel explores the intricate bond between two flawed individuals seeking fulfillment.
Brodie aimed to create a modern epic akin to *Romeo & Juliet* and *Wuthering Heights*, framing AJ and Noah's relationship as one of intellectual companionship and profound artistic trust, combined with a primal physical bond. Character development played a significant role, with Brodie expressing particular affection for AJ’s twin sister Emily and Noah’s great aunt Eudora, who serves as a mentor in improvisation.
The writing process presented challenges, notably the book's lengthy first draft of 180,000 words. With the help of her team, Brodie managed to reduce the manuscript by 50,000 words while retaining its emotional essence.
Looking ahead, Brodie is in the idea-gathering phase for her next project but is also promoting upcoming titles from her publishing work. One of the books she’s excited about is *'Tis Thee Not Me* by Clarice Tudor, out on May 5.
Brodie also expressed enthusiasm for numerous books set to release this year, including *Beneath* by Ariel Sullivan and the sequel to her own publishing day release, *YESTERYEAR*.
