Spoken word poetry has been a vital artistic presence in South Florida for decades, gaining immense popularity in the early 2000s with the influence of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and films like Love Jones and Slam. The local poetry scene flourished, featuring open mic nights and radio stations that blended soul music with spoken word performances. Notable Miami poets, including the late Will “Da Real One” Bell, greatly contributed to this vibrant artistic community, particularly through venues like the former Literary Cafe.
Ingrid B has played a significant role in this scene, recognized both as a host and a promoter, providing an unfiltered literary space for the community. She emphasizes the profound impact these events have on audiences, often hearing from attendees expressing how much they needed the experience.
Though the spoken word scene faced challenges with the rise of digital media, Ingrid B asserts that it has not disappeared and continues to thrive, blending cultures and supporting a diverse audience. Her events also provide opportunities for local vendors and artists, fostering a creative community.
The B Side Slam will take place on Sunday, April 12, 2026, from 5 PM to 9 PM at the Red Rooster Overtown, located at 920 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33136.
