In a recent interview, Hoffman was asked to describe his book, 'The Prospects,' using only song titles. He mentioned songs like Kermit's rendition of “Rainbow Connection,” “The Sporting Life” and “Once In My Life” by The Decemberists, “I Like That” by Janelle Monáe, “Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy” by Queen, and “THAT’S WHAT I WANT” by Lil Nas X as key influences.

Hoffman's love for baseball developed while writing a scene that featured a baseball game in a different book. He began following the Seattle Mariners, finding a connection with the sport because it values diverse body types and the perseverance of its players. He hopes to see representation of trans players like Gene, a character in his novel, in Major League Baseball.

When discussing the best baseball position, Hoffman stated it depends on one's criteria for “best.” Objectively, he said the catcher is vital due to their game awareness, but personally, he favors the middle infield positions for their coordination and high-stakes dynamics.

Hoffman also shared insights about Gene and Luis, two characters in his book. He imagines Gene as someone adept at social media, producing engaging content, whereas Luis is more low-key, posting infrequently.

He expressed a desire for readers to feel the warmth and excitement of a summer baseball game while reading 'The Prospects,' capturing the thrill of hope and the potential for achieving big dreams. Hoffman also recommended several books, including Alicia Thompson's 'With Love, From Cold World,' Anita Kelly's 'Something Wild & Wonderful,' and Lamya H's 'Hijab Butch Blues' for their profound messages of found family and self-discovery.
